Exploring classical music

Classical music embraces orchestral, chamber, solo and vocal works. You can explore Baroque, Classical and Romantic music as well as twentieth-century and contemporary compositions. The Classical period refers to a particular historical era associated with composers such as Mozart and Haydn.

Orchestral concerts

A symphony orchestra combines the colours of strings, winds and percussion. A programme may include a symphony, an overture or an instrumental concerto featuring a soloist.

Chamber music and recitals

A quartet, trio or solo recital lets you hear the details of individual performances. With a smaller ensemble, you can follow how musicians pass a melody between them and respond to one another.

Opera and choral music

Opera brings together music, storytelling and the stage. A choral concert puts the human voice at its centre, whether unaccompanied, with instruments or alongside an orchestra.

Musical eras at a glance

Classical music spans several centuries. A rough division into eras helps you find your way – the boundaries are approximate and many composers cross them.

Concerts by city and composer

Choose a city or a composer to see all upcoming concerts listed on ProMusica (pages in Czech).

Choosing your first concert

  1. Start with a convenient place and date. Search the ProMusica programme by city, performer or composer and narrow down the period.
  2. Open the concert details to check the works, performers, venue and information supplied by the organiser. A video invitation or short recording can give you a feel for the event.
  3. Choose a sound that appeals to you: a solo instrument, a small ensemble, an orchestra or voices. You do not need to read music or know specialist terms to enjoy a concert.
  4. Confirm the time and ticket availability with the organiser. Arrive early and silence your phone; an usher can help you find your way. If you are unsure about applause between movements, follow the performers and the audience.

How to start listening

  1. Start with well-known shorter pieces or single movements: Smetana's Vltava, Dvořák's Slavonic Dances, Vivaldi's Four Seasons or Ravel's Boléro.
  2. Listen to the programme before the concert. A melody you already know is easier to recognise in the hall, and you can follow how the performers shape it.
  3. Compare the same work in different performances. Differences in tempo, dynamics and colour show how much the performance itself shapes the music.
  4. Try different line-ups: orchestra, chamber ensemble, solo recital, choir and opera. Each offers a different experience and a different closeness to the musicians.
  5. Read interviews and reviews in Svět Hudby – the stories behind the music and its performers add a new dimension to listening.
